Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Assessments

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is equipment worn to minimize exposure hazards that may cause serious injuries or illnesses. PPE, when used properly, minimizes an employee’s exposure, or contact with chemical, radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical, and other workplace hazards.

PPE is the last line of defense to protect the workforce when Elimination, Substitution, and other control measures are not available. Some examples of commonly used PPE are gloves, safety-rated glasses and shoes, ear plugs or muffs, hard hats, respirators, and hazard-resistant clothing.

For PPE to properly protect the employee, the correct selection, fit, and maintenance are very important. A proper assessment of hazards gives you the information needed to assign the appropriate PPE to protect the employee from workplace hazards.
